Johnston Mentoring/Tutoring

The main focus of Blazer service is the commitment of each Blazer to spend at least one hour a week either mentoring or tutoring a student at Johnston High School. This year, the mentorship program has partnered with the X-Y Zone, a male pregnancy prevention program, which is also committed to improving upon the character of at-risk students.

In addition to these two core activities, the Blazers have also taken their mentees to service projects, UT basketball games, and tours of the UT campus. These relationships with Johnston students strive to do more than just help them improve in school; they seek to show them a world outside their East Austin neighborhood.

In the fall semester, the Blazers contributed 452 hours to Johnston students. The Blazers anticipate matching or exceeding this commitment during the spring, for a year total of more than 900 volunteer hours with Johnston students.
